If you're confident with colour but hesitant about pattern, you're not alone. Many of my interior design clients know what they like and dislike regarding colour. However, they often feel unsure about using pattern in their homes. They worry that patterns will clash, become too busy, or result in a design disaster.
But here’s the truth: pattern is your secret styling weapon. When used correctly, pattern can completely transform a space. It adds warmth, personality, depth, and cohesion to a room. Without it, interiors can feel flat and soulless.
In this post, I’m going to show you how to confidently use pattern in your home, so it all pulls together beautifully.

Why Is Pattern Important in Interior Design?
Pattern plays a crucial role in creating a cohesive and characterful space. It adds texture, visual interest, and emotion. A well-chosen pattern can highlight architectural features, zone open-plan areas, or create a sense of calm or drama, depending on how you use it.
If you’ve ever felt like something is missing in a room, it’s often because there’s no pattern or not enough of it. Patterns can bring spaces to life, turning them from mundane to memorable.
Where to Begin: Start with a Hero Piece
To build a well-balanced scheme, begin with a “hero” item. This might be a patterned fabric, wallpaper, rug, or even a cushion. Your hero piece sets the tone, style, and colour palette for the rest of the room.
Tip: If you plan to include a rug in your design, choose it early on. It’s much easier to build a scheme around a rug than to find one that matches everything later.

Build Around the Hero: Colour + Pattern + Scale
Now that you have your hero piece, use the colours from it to guide the rest of your scheme. Layer in additional patterns in different scales. This is one of the most important rules for mixing patterns successfully.
Consider the following combination:
One large-scale pattern (e.g., a bold floral curtain)
One medium-scale pattern (e.g., a geometric cushion)
One small-scale pattern (e.g., a delicate stripe or print)
This mix keeps the eye moving and creates a sense of balance and sophistication.
Which Patterns Work Together?
Don’t be afraid to mix different types of patterns. Whether it’s stripes, florals, botanicals, or geometrics, the key is to keep the colour palette consistent and vary the scale. A good combination might include:
A large-scale botanical,
A medium geometric,
A small repeating print.
These can all coexist happily in one room if they share common colours, offering a delightful visual experience.

Don’t Forget Texture & Solids
Every pattern needs breathing space. Mix in plain fabrics, solid colours, and natural materials like wood, stone, linen, or wool. These elements provide your eye with a place to rest, balance the energy of the pattern, and prevent the space from feeling chaotic.
Consider incorporating neutral patterned pieces or textured solids like boucle or jute. These can add depth without overwhelming your design scheme.
Pattern for Zoning & Feature Areas
Pattern is an excellent tool for open-plan or awkward spaces. Use a patterned rug to define a living area within a kitchen-diner. Add pattern through curtains to draw attention to beautiful windows. Or, create a cosy layer in a nook with patterned upholstery and textured walls.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Many people go wrong in two main ways:
Using patterns all in the same scale – This creates visual confusion and lacks a focal point.
Wandering out of your colour palette – Too many clashing colours lead to an overwhelming and chaotic atmosphere.
Another common mistake is neglecting to add enough solid colour or texture to balance the patterns.

A Real-Life Example: Transforming a Space
I recently helped a client update her space after a new extension changed the layout of her home. We created a warm, welcoming snug using a mix of colour and pattern. She shared her experience, saying:
“I could never get it 'just right' and was always 'just off' on my colour and design ideas. Your vision and designs work so well, and I am now creating a home that I've wanted for a long time.”
She just needed a bit of direction on how to confidently use pattern and make her space feel complete.
