Renovation Translation: Traffic Flow

What is Traffic flow in Interior Design and why does it matter to your renovation?

Traffic flow is a term designers use when talking about how people move through a home. It sounds technical, but it’s actually quite simple and it plays a big role in whether a house feels comfortable to live in.

Traffic flow refers to the natural paths people take when moving through a room or between spaces.

Good traffic flow means:

  • walkways feel natural

  • furniture isn’t blocking movement

  • people aren’t constantly walking through working areas like kitchens

Poor traffic flow often shows up when:

  • rooms feel cramped despite being large

  • doors clash with furniture

  • people have to squeeze past seating areas

  • kitchens become thoroughfares

Why it matters in renovations

When planning a renovation, improving traffic flow is often one of the biggest benefits of changing the layout. Moving a doorway, shifting a wall, or repositioning a kitchen can completely change how a home functions day to day.

If you’re planning a renovation and want help thinking through your layout before work begins, an early design consultation can make a huge difference.
